Summer Open Day and Club Improvements

First and foremost, a massive thank you to everyone who came down, picked up a racket, and supported the club. The atmosphere was brilliant, and we had a fantastic turnout—completely defying the gloomy forecasts from the naysayers at the Met Office!

A special thank you to the team who organised the day, especially Kirk, Rebecca, and Juliet (and family), as well as everyone who helped out on the day itself. Events like this simply don’t happen without people like you giving up your time, and the whole club is very grateful.

As many of you know, the paving slabs around the club have been cracking for years. This was exacerbated recently by the heavy machinery used to relay courts 1–4, which proved too much for them despite the contractors using heavy-duty ground protection mats.

Upon closer inspection, we have discovered the root cause: an ill-installed substrate under the slabs has slowly washed away over the last 25 years, leaving the paving completely unsupported and fragile. To make matters trickier, that specific slab size is no longer manufactured, so simply swapping out the broken ones isn't an option. These things are sent to try us!

Dan and Tina from The Reformery have done an excellent job resurfacing the area next to the clubhouse using surplus artificial grass carpet from courts 1–4. The salvaged undamaged slabs will be used to replace the broken ones in front of the clubhouse.

This is a short-term measure to buy us some time and keep the venue safe and presentable. Total replacement of the paving will need to be undertaken in the future when club funds allow.

The next step in our ongoing facility improvements is the installation of new fencing and LED floodlights on courts 5, 6, and 7.

Because we want to get this absolutely right, we want to hear from you. If you have any technical suggestions, or if you can share any positive or negative experiences you’ve had with different types of sports lighting and fencing elsewhere, please get in touch with us. Your feedback is invaluable as we shape the future of our playing facilities.

REMINDER: the court booking system goes live on June 15th.

See you on court soon!
